Barbecue Dishes for Beginners

Not everyone starts off being able to use a barbecue grill with expert precision. Of course cooking is a learning process and that holds true when you’re using a gas or charcoal barbecue as well. The most important thing is to charge forward even when you make mistakes because sometimes you can learn a lot when something doesn’t turn out right. But at the same time it’s important to progress at a reasonable level so that you don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you’re using the best barbecue ingredients around and you simply can’t afford to go around burning everything you put on the grill. This is why it’s good to start off with simple dishes that anyone can handle. After you’ve mastered some of these delicious items, then you can add your own personal twist and progressed to more complex recipes that will dazzle your taste buds in different ways. Here are some great suggestions for barbecue food if you are a beginner.

Burgers – we were tempted to offer the suggestion of hot dogs which is ultimately one of the easiest things you can throw onto a grill. Everything is prepared for you and you simply have to leave a hotdog on long enough until it’s done. But seriously, if you can’t handle a hotdog then you shouldn’t be let anywhere near a barbecue anyways. As for burgers, they are a bit more complex because you should be putting them together yourself. Don’t fall for the trap of frozen burgers because they are never as good as the real thing. The secret is to find a great hamburger recipe that includes just enough flavor while remembering that the grill is going to do a lot of the work for you in adding even more taste. It’s important to be patient while cooking a burger on a barbecue and you don’t want to make the mistake of flipping it too soon or too often.

Chicken Wings – chicken wings can be a wonderful appetizer for your barbecue or they can be the main course. We recommend a very simple marinade of honey, soya sauce, and a touch of garlic. Some people choose to cook their chicken wings and slather them with barbecue sauce while on the grill. We prefer not to use this method since we don’t want to overpower the chicken with artificial barbecue flavor. We would prefer to let the grill confuse the chicken with its signature taste, while getting a wonderfully crispy skin on the outside. The great thing about chicken wings is that you can actually keep them on the grill for quite some time without having them dry out. Just move them to a cooler side of the barbecue when you think they’re about to be done and finished cooking the other items on your outdoor barbecue.

Salmon – salmon is incredibly easy to prepare on a barbecue because when you do it properly, you don’t even have to flip it. Make sure to place it skin side down and you can let it grill directly or close the lid for even faster cooking. You don’t even have to add that much flavor to a fresh piece of salmon although you can opt to include some delicious herbs and of course a touch of lemon. We also like to add sun-dried tomatoes to the mix as the sweet taste offers a wonderful complement to the lemon. When done properly, a nice piece of barbecue salmon will have a delicious crispy skin while the rest of the fish is juicy and tender on the inside.
